Lanmeur is a small market-town of about 2300 inhabitants, both in the country and near the sea. It is in the middle of everywhere, less than a hour’s drive from Brest and less than ten – minutes – drive from the nine wonderful beaches of Locquirec. Its name comes from “Lan” which means “hermitage” and “meur” which means “big “ in old Breton language. In ancient times, it was called “Kerfeunteun” (town of the fountain ).
You will enjoy visiting some of its rich and very interesting historical sites as the Crypt Saint Melar dating from the IXth. Century, under the church and which is considered as one of the oldest Christian sites in Brittany as well as the Chapel of Kernitron close to the graveyard and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Kernitron means “the house of the lady and its fountain” which was said to be an ancient priory built by the Knights Templar.
Every year, on August 15 th, a procession dedicated to the Virgin Mary is held around the Chapel.
